Choosing Sleeping Bags for Your Camping Kids

One of the most common questions new campers have is what type of sleeping bag to buy for their upcoming camping trip. There are so many options to choose from and, in the case of kids’ sleeping bags, some consideration needs to be given regarding how much they will be growing and will they grow out of it.

When shopping for the perfect kids’ sleeping bag you’ll find plenty of features to sort through such as size, weight, shape, and fabric. The most important thing to keep in mind is the comfort of the child and the predicted temperatures you’ll be camping in. If most of your camping will be in mid-summer you can comfortably get a lighter sleeping bag. If you’re a fall or winter camper you’ll need something much heavier. The challenge can be that these little people may not like a heavy sleeping bag or they may kick their way out of a lightweight one, as well.

Take your child’s sleeping patterns into consideration. Do they move a lot when they are sleeping? If the chance is good that they will wake in the night all twisted up in their sleeping bag, you may think about purchasing a camping cot and adding sheets and blankets to it. This will offer the child more freedom. If it’s going to be cold out you can put them to bed in footed pajamas or put nice warm socks on their feet, pulling them up over their pajama pant legs.

Most campers will be happy with a standard kids’ sleeping bag while packing extra blankets, just in case. They really do grow so fast that the bags won’t get a lot of wear and tear. Make sure there is plenty of length and width for them to move, the zippers slide easily, and the fabric will not absorb moisture from the ground or floor while they sleep.

We hope all your camping trips are memorable for the whole family. Getting a good night’s sleep can add to the probability that the kids will want to go again as soon as possible.
